After all, the first week I was here I hit all the guidebook hotspots\u2014the bridge troll, the gum wall, the Space Needle. Over the years I\u2019ve caught up on some of the must-do spots and best kept secrets as well. I\u2019ve hung out at KEXP\u2019s Gathering Room and taken in a live broadcast while enjoying some coffee from La Marzocco. I\u2019ve chased away the winter with some mead from the White Horse Tavern in Post Alley. And now, thanks to the energetic lineup of SeaJAM, I\u2019m finally going to make it to Mercer Island in style!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sjcc.org\/arts-ideas\/seajam-festival\/\"><b>SeaJAM<\/b><\/a><b> is a weekend-long festival (December 8-9) hosted at the <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/sjcc.org\/\"><b>Stroum Jewish Community Center<\/b><\/a><b>.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They\u2019re jamming all weekend long in celebration of Hanukkah, and they\u2019ve put together an amazing festival of Jewish and\/or Israeli dance, comedy, music, theater, and more. Saturday features performances by klezmer champion <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BoBldJ2xeKk\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David Krakauer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, legendary funk trombonist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=R64Eu2uatwY\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fred Wesley<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and hip-hop renegade <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=i07VrsMTIaU\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Socalled<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That\u2019s a collision of musical styles I\u2019m excited to see!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Sunday morning I\u2019ll wake up early and take in some Mercer Island scenery. I\u2019ve heard good things about the hikes in Pioneer Park (always open to trail suggestions!), and I\u2019ll need something to energize before the festivities start back up at noon. For all the parents out there, make sure you stop by and see indie-pop band <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=R7JiDBi_v4c\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The LeeVees<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at their 1:00PM performance for the &#8220;Hanukkah Rocks&#8221; Family Dance Party. There are also plenty of Hanukkah games and art (although you\u2019ll find me by the food trucks.) <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To pass the time until the shows that evening, I\u2019ll probably check out <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercerislandbooks.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Island Books<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. I\u2019m a frequent visitor to Seattle\u2019s wide array of bookstores, including Elliott Bay Books, Third Place Books, and of course Twice Sold Tales. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then on Sunday night I\u2019ll find a seat for a new dance performance from emerging choreographer\/dancer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=A8rowURWsUU\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rebecca Margolick<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and composer\/graphic artist Maxx Berkowitz, as well as an appearance by comedian <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yfEBI7JdzpQ\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cathy Ladman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. She&#8217;s been on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Tonight Show<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> nine times, written for TV sitcoms, and appeared in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Charlie Wilson&#8217;s War,<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mad Men<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curb Your Enthusiasm<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and most recently <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Modern Family<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>SeaJAM has something for everyone<\/strong>, whether it\u2019s comedy, food, art, a family dance party\u2014or if you\u2019re like me, a chance to finally explore a part of Seattle that you\u2019ve been missing out on.
