One of the largest sections of the original Town Crier was \u201cWhat People Are Doing,\u201d highlighting things like, \u201cMrs. George Noble Skinner has been confined to her room at the Terry Hotel with a severe case of neuritis,\u201d and, \u201cMrs. Prescott Oakes has returned from Santa Barbara, where she spent a few weeks.\u201d In this new series we\u2019re revisiting the old column and tying it to our community\u2019s current happenings, asking: \u201cwhat <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">are <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">people doing?\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Today\u2019s entry\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43664\" src=\"https:\/\/townhallseattle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Page_1-4-1-451x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On the cover of the March 15, 1919 edition of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Town Crier<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was one of the most famous musicians alive at that time, cellist Pablo Casals. He played at the Masonic Temple, at Harvard and Pine, on March 19. Prices ran from 83 cents to $2.20 (including war tax). The <em>Crier<\/em> waxed poetic about Casal\u2019s coming concert inside the publication. \u201cWhen master musicians like Fritz Kreisler says that Casals is the greatest musician that has ever drawn a bow and Eugene Ysaye adds that he is the greatest interpretive artist he has ever heard, than we know that we are not listening to any \u2018fairy stories\u2019 that may or may not come true.\u201d The praise kept on coming. \u201c<strong>He plays so tenderly he melts the heart of you; plays like an angel, either damned or celestial.<\/strong> There is something diabolic in his energy of attack, an attack like the slash of a sabre. What temperament! What surety! What purity of intonation!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pablo Casals (1876-1973) was a cellist, composer, and conductor from Catalonia, Spain. Regarded as one of the greatest cellists who ever lived, he is perhaps best known for his recordings of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KX1YtvFZOj0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bach\u2019s Cello Suites<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1963.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Town Hall\u2019s got a cellist with temperament, surety, and purity, as well. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joshuaroman.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Joshua Roman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> has been Town Hall\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/townhallseattle.org\/event-listings\/arts-culture\/town-music\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Town Music<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Artistic Director for over a decade. And, if you\u2019re still keen for local cello music, did you know there\u2019s a local nonprofit that provides cellos to recipients actively studying and performing?
