One of the largest sections of the original Town Crier was \u201cWhat People Are Doing,\u201d highlighting things like, \u201cIn the Northwest the game of golf seems to have wrought havoc with tennis,\u201d and, \u201cMrs. Thomas Bordeaux entertained with a dinner of sixteen covers on Saturday evening.\u201d In this series we\u2019re revisiting the old column and tying it to our community\u2019s current happenings, asking: \u201cwhat <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">are <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">people doing?\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Today\u2019s entry\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-44420\" src=\"https:\/\/townhallseattle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Page_3-2-1-444x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"444\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On the cover of the May 24, 1919 edition of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Town Crier<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was Mme. Borgny Hammer. Mme. Hammer and her husband Rolf were coming to Seattle to perform at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/pacific-nw-magazine\/see-norway-hall-in-1915-and-see-it-now-as-part-of-cornish-college\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Norway Hall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. They were going to perform Henrik Ibsen\u2019s play, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Master_Builder\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Master Builder<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Adele Ballard, a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Town Crier<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> regular, with her column \u201cVarious and Sundry,\u201d said of the acclaimed actress, \u201cI saw her the other day for a few minutes. She came into the office and it was a warm and rather enervating day, but in about one minute, or less, she re-vitalized the whole atmosphere with her vivid personality: she is like the breezes blown from the sea across the snow-capped mountains, or like the wild flowers of her own land, the hardy ones that force their way up through the rocks into the sunlight of Norway.\u201d High praise, indeed!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Forcing its way today through the bustling busy blocks of Ballard has come the newly redesigned <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nordicmuseum.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">National Nordic Museum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The gleaming edifice opened in May of 2018. <strong>It is an internationally recognized museum and cultural center dedicated to collecting, preserving, and educating since its founding in 1980.<\/strong> The National Nordic Museum is the largest museum in the United States to honor the legacy of immigrants from the five Nordic countries: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. Current exhibitions include \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nordicmuseum.org\/exhibitions\/studio54\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Studio 54 &amp; Beyond: The Photography of Hasse Persson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d and \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nordicmuseum.org\/exhibitions\/177087\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bamse: The World\u2019s Strongest Bear<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Also, Town Hall\u2019s Capital Campaign Manager, Grant P.H. Barber, is doing a class there on June 8. <strong>You can <\/strong><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nordicmuseum.org\/events\/173825\">learn how to brew a batch of Finnish Sahti<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong> in the traditional method of USING A HOLLOW LOG<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We wonder if the Nordic Museum has anything about Mme. Hammer in their permanent collections? We at the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Town Crier<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> will investigate.
