One of the largest sections of the original Town Crier was \u201cWhat People Are Doing,\u201d highlighting things like, \u201cNow that the holidays are over there is an aftermath of deadly quiet in social circles\u201d and, \u201cIn celebration of the wedding day of George and Martha Washington, the Rainier Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is giving an elaborate card party at the Scottish Rite Temple.\u201d In this series we\u2019re revisiting the old column and tying it to our community\u2019s current happenings, asking: \u201cwhat <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">are <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">people doing?\u201d<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Today\u2019s entry\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-47784\" src=\"https:\/\/townhallseattle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Spring-Hats-508x600.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"591\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There was an ad in the January 17, 1920 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Town Crier <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">for Violet Tatum Hats. \u201cAlready-are hats appearing in the shiny straws and bright flowers- suggesting early Spring.\u201d Hats were a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vintagedancer.com\/1920s\/1920s-style-cloche-hats\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">big thing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in the 1920s. And Spring is a big thing at Town Hall. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">True, Spring 2020 doesn\u2019t begin in the Northern Hemisphere until Thursday, March 19 but Town Hall\u2019s got an early spring with a plethora of events. For instance:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">January 17: <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/townhallseattle.org\/event\/mozart-birthday-toast-2020\/\">Mozart Birthday Toast<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Raise your glass to celebreate Mozart\u2019s birthday with an evening of intimate masterpieces by one of the most beloved composers of all time. The concert will be performed by Byron Schenkman and friends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">January 31: <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/townhallseattle.org\/event\/lyric-world\/\">Lyric World<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. How can poetry expand our understanding of civic life? Poet and former Town Hall Artist-In-Residence Shin Yu Pai invites us to the first of her Lyric World discussions, exploring the role of poetry as it stokes our curiosity and gives voice and attention to the human experience..\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">February 8: <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/townhallseattle.org\/event\/westerlies-fest-2020\/\">Sarah Kay and Phil Kaye<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. As part of Westerlies Fest 2020, spoken word poets Sarah Kay and Phil Kaye join the Seattle-bred, New York-based brass quartet The Westerlies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">February 9: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/townhallseattle.org\/event\/ensemble-caprice\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Ensemble Caprice<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Early Music Seattle presents a rendition of Vivaldi\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Montezuma<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.It is a semi-staged opera production reconstructed and reimagined by Ensemble Caprice Musical Director Matthias Maute.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">February 22: <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/townhallseattle.org\/event\/showtunes-theatre-company-20th-anniversary-gala\/\">Showtunes Theatre Company\u2019s 20th Anniversary Gala<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. It will be a night filled with laughter, music, memories, and surprises.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">February 23: <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/townhallseattle.org\/event\/through-the-glass\/\">North Corner Chamber Orchestra<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. \u201cThrough the Glass,\u201d the third concert cycle in NOCCO\u2019s 2019-20 season, shines a light on important though often forgotten elements of our musical fabric: women composers and young performers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">February 29: <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/townhallseattle.org\/event\/miguel-zenon-quartet\/\">Miguel Zenon Quartet<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Earshot Jazz brings one of the most groundbreaking and influential saxophonists of his generation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">March 1: <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/townhallseattle.org\/event\/marc-ribot-and-haram\/\">Haram with special guest Marc Ribot<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Our Global Rhythms series continues with Haram, a Vancouver-based group led by Juno Award-winning oud virtuoso Gordon Grdina.
