She began her relationship with us back in 2018 as an Inside\/Out Artist in Residence for the Phinney\/Greenwood neighborhood, curating programs that brought new local voices like author <\/span><b>Thomas Hitoshi Pruiksma, Kathleen Alcal\u00e1<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Rex Hohlbein<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Facing Homelessness, and artist <\/span><b>Susan Robb<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the Town Hall Stage. In 2020, she wrote the vital blog piece, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/townhallseattle.org\/town-hall-land-acknowledgment-beyond-gestures\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Town Hall Land Acknowledgement: Beyond Gestures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and pitched the concept to produce what would eventually become <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lyric World<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, her podcast series centering on poets and poetry by BIPOC writers, with an emphasis on AAPI authors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the years, Shin Yu\u2019s presence at Town Hall has brought intention and community focus to our programming; it only seems natural that she became our Program Director earlier this year. As we begin to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/townhallseattle.org\/plan-your-visit\/building-policies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">safely<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> host in-person events, I am honored to develop programs that reflect new relationships with community partners, center conversations on racial equity, and increase the visibility of work done by BIPOC creators. (Learn more about our racial equity statement and commitments <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/townhallseattle.org\/about\/racial-equity-statement\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.) Below is a small preview of what the season holds:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/townhallseattle.org\/event-listings\/arts-culture\/\"><b>Arts &amp; Culture<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> series elevates the work of local artists and brings world-renowned cultural icons to Seattle audiences. This fall is no exception as we welcome national luminaries like Pixar cofounder <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/townhallseattle.org\/event\/alvy-ray-smith\/\"><b>Alvy Ray Smith<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Guggenheim Fellow <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/townhallseattle.org\/event\/farah-jasmine-griffin\/\"><b>Dr. Farah Jasmine Griffin<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, along with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Seattle Emerald <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">founder <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/townhallseattle.org\/event\/marcus-harrison-green-2021\/\"><b>Marcus Harrison Green<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and illustrator <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/townhallseattle.org\/event\/susanna-ryan-with-knute-berger\/\"><b>Susanna Ryan <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seattle Walk Report<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in conversation<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crosscut<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;s<\/span><b> Knute \u201cMossback\u201d Berger<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new season also offers more <\/span><b>musical opportunities <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">than ever before. Our five-concert Global Rhythms series (<em>tickets on sale soon!<\/em>) begins in October with <\/span><b>Quetzal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Los Angeles-based rock group founded by Chicano Artivista and guitarist <\/span><b>Quetzal Flores.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Further into the series, we&#8217;ll hear from master of the rub\u00e2b <\/span><b>Homayoun Sakhi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Korean shamanic folk-pop band <\/span><b>Ak Dan Gwang Chil (ADG7)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and other exciting artists.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bridging the realms of literature and music, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/townhallseattle.org\/event-listings\/arts-culture\/bushwick-book-club\/\"><b>The Bushwick Book Club Seattle<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will present their entire 9-concert series in The Forum, including songs inspired by <\/span><b>Michele Zauner\u2019s<\/b> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crying in H Mart <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and a tribute to children\u2019s author <\/span><b>Beverly Cleary<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gage Academy of Arts founder <\/span><b>Gary Faigin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> returns to host a series of conversations with visual artists, including <\/span><b>Annie Han and<\/b> <b>Daniel Mihalyo <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of Lead Pencil Studio<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and critically-acclaimed portraitist <\/span><b>Rose Frantzen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Later in the season, our <\/span><b>Short Stories Live<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> series makes a grand return.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Town Hall\u2019s <\/span><b>Community Partnerships<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> start the season strong with<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a mayoral candidate forum presented by<\/span><b> Inspire Washington. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Later this fall, look for several free, interactive racial equity workshops, the first of which will be led by Seattle-based MIT author and speaker <\/span><b>Ruchika Tulshyan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/townhallseattle.org\/event-listings\/civics\/\"><b>Civics<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> series brings <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York Times<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> best-selling author <\/span><b>Keisha N. Blain, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">journalist and former White House aide <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/townhallseattle.org\/event\/keith-boykin\/\"><b>Keith Boykin<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, youth literacy advocate <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/townhallseattle.org\/event\/tracy-swinton-bailey\/\"><b>Tracy Swinton Bailey<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, radio host <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/townhallseattle.org\/event\/thom-hartmann-2021\/\">Thom Hartmann<\/a>, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and many more thought leaders to our stages for thought-provoking discussions on social and political issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last but not least, our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/townhallseattle.org\/event-listings\/science\/\"><b>Science <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">series explores topics like longevity with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/townhallseattle.org\/event\/nir-barzilai-with-dr-nathan-price\/\"><b>Dr. Nir Barzilai <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/townhallseattle.org\/event\/nir-barzilai-with-dr-nathan-price\/\"><b> Dr. Nathan Price <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the <\/span><b>Institute for Systems Biology<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the response of plants and animals to climate change with natural historian <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/townhallseattle.org\/event\/thor-hanson-2021\/\"><b>Thor Hanson<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and a lifetime of musings on animals with author <\/span><b>Susan Orlean<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
